New Job - 3D Visualiser

Hello Peeps,
The season of Christmas is upon us and the Ford family are all buzzing with excitement for tomorrow...

I would like to take this to reflect on the past 6 weeks in my job working as a 3D Visualiser in a High-end company and the differences in my previous job as a 3D Modellor for a construction company.
I thought, like many of you, that the change would be easy and minimal. Infact the differences are vast...
  • Knowledge of everyday object dimensions is essential,
  • Knowledge of lights and the impact each light has on a room is critical,
  • Understanding materials and the differences in reflectivity, refraction, transmittance etc each surface has is essential.
  • Finally, Application of these 3 points in the lighting system Vray to get the best result in an image.
For interiors, the application of these tools and understanding how each material works and interacts with the other objects in a scene, is everything!  I feel that my understanding of these forces is increasing as each project goes by.

To show you how my progression is going, I attach a test render of my home bathroom.  We have recently had this done and I thought it would be a good scene to try and do at home.  As usual, let me know if you have comments.

Anyways, I forgot to mention that the job is going well and my colleagues at work are nice and very helpful.  My only hope is that I can continue working there after my trial period ends...  I can see myself working there for a very long time if everything continues to go well.

Have a good Christmas and Happy New Year!

Job Sucess

Hey bloggers, well finally I have some good Job news.  I have been offered a trial at The Bionic Group (http://www.thebionicgroup.com/) in Pinewood Studios in relation to getting a permanent job there..  Amazing!  I am over the moon, what an opportunity, I get to work at Pinewood studios everyday!  The only problem is the daily commute, over 1.5 hours in the car :( Obviously I will look for somewhere to live after I get offered the job but its come around so quickly.  I could be back living on my own again within the month, after being home for nearly 3 years since finishing Uni.

Job Hunting

Hey guys and gals, I feel I am getting closer to the prize of working full-time in the 3D industry.  Last month I worked for Autonomy, on a iPhone app and met some lovely people, after that I worked for SquareZero in Shoreditch as an Intern where I learnt quite alot about Animator and their habits.  Anyway, this all helps look good on your CV and I managed to get an interview at Bionic in Pinewood Studios, where fingers-crossed, I might get a full-time job.  Just waiting to hear back..  In the meantime I am continuing on with my Submarine project and Water Tower - texturing project plus applying for more jobs.. I will keep you posted.

Life..

Well my firends, how have you been? I knew I called this blog 'Freelancing' for a reason.. the freelancing job windmill has been busy.. I know no longer work at Autonomy due to the company stressing a focus on the need for experienced Animators, even though none look to be in place within the foreseeable future, and my work taking as long as others..  what were they thinking in hiring 6 3D generalists in the first place?  I guess the fact I was costing more than my colleagues was an issue but a cheap one if that.  Nevermind, the placement at SquareZero is now my priority and I have heard that I may start next week..  Until then, I plan on finishing my Man O'War Submarine.  Yesterday I completed a tutorial on creating water, and tried to crack the reactor tool in order to get realistic water movement.  Today I have been editing the Sub textures, adding more detail, here are my results..

Submarine, Kill count.  Think the symbols have come up really well.

Freelancing

I set a goal for myself at the beginning of year, a news-year resolution you might say, to find and get some freelance animation work under my belt.  I have been able to do so by working on three completely different projects;  firstly working with a friend to create a one minute presentation of a new product to be displayed at a counter-terror expo in London, secondly working independently for university society board creating an opening animation sequence to their website and thirdly, I have worked freelance for a London based animation company working on a motion comic film utilizing still images.  I am currently still working on this project...

However, I am still not satisfied with my efforts and my wish next year in 2011 is to finally break into the market!  As most new graduates or animation artists will know, this is easier said then done.  The market is saturated with more experienced artists who have lost their jobs due to the economic down-turn and new kids on the block whose only wish is to play video games all day and re-design past and present characters.
